Artist Statement

My work focuses on investigating the human-nonhuman relationship through the exploration of materials, the body, and space.

I primarily create large-scale sculptures and installations by arm-knitting with hand-dyed unspun wool and fabric. Every installation is site-specific, as the sculptures are reworked and assume a new configuration each time, interacting with the exhibition space.

Through the scale and materials of the sculptures, my works immediately communicate with and to the body. My practice reconnects with the body as a way of being in the world, seeing it as a useful means in approaching the nonhuman. During the technique of arm-knitting, the body is chained to the work and is enmeshed with the material. The resulting structures, although made through the body, exceed it and its capabilities, making me realize, more generally, the limits of human singularity.
The concept of what it means to be human, interacting with the "natural world" and its materials, constantly emerges in my practice, as I believe that humans are not outside of nature and cannot be seen as separate. This notion is further explored in the creation of dyes, where I am continuously surprised by the materials during the dyeing and foraging process. Every natural material is unique and interacts differently within each dyeing bath. Colour, achieved naturally or synthetically, is a key aspect of my work, as I aim to explore the dichotomies and interactions between natural and artificial and to unveil the hidden narratives that lie beneath colour.
By reconnecting with the materiality and power of textiles, I aim to advocate more broadly for a new consciousness of care and intrinsic knowledge for materials and surroundings, which only comes from working alongside these silent nonhuman actors.
